The Origins of ADHD from an Evolutionary Perspective
Son Jung-Woo

Nam Jung-Hyun
Abstract
Purpose : There has been much research studying the proximal causality of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) about neurobiological or psychological aspect. However, a few researchers have studied so far the ultimate causality of ADHD from an evolutionary perspective. This study was intended to investigate and summarize ADHD research from an evolutionary perspective.

Materials and Methods : The authors tried to investigate ADHD research from an evolutionary perspective through reviewing materials and compare the results of investigation with each model of Darwinian medicine.

Results : The ADHD researches from an evolutionary perspective dealt with 4 hypothesis. They were as follows: 1) ¡®hunters vs. farmers¡¯ hypothesis, 2) ¡®gene-culture co-evolution¡¯ hypothesis, 3) aggression hypothesis, 4) ¡®waders¡¯ hypothesis. Each hypothesis was applied to the mismatch model or the adaptationist model of Darwinian medicine.

Conclusion : The evolutionary perspective about ADHD considerably explained the ultimate causality of ADHD. The evolutionary perspective could serve as an important basis for future research on ADHD.
